Background of the Study
Financial statement analysis is a critical tool for evaluating the financial health of any organization, particularly within the banking sector. It involves the examination of financial statements—such as the balance sheet, income statement, and cash flow statement—to assess an institution’s performance, profitability, liquidity, and solvency (Adeoye & Ajayi, 2023). For banks, these analyses are indispensable in making informed decisions about credit, investment, and risk management. Wema Bank, one of Nigeria's oldest commercial banks, relies on financial statement analysis to guide strategic decisions, improve operational efficiency, and ensure regulatory compliance.
In Kwara State, Wema Bank plays a pivotal role in the financial services sector, offering a wide range of banking products, including savings and investment accounts, loans, and other financial services. The decision-making process in Wema Bank, like in many financial institutions, is heavily dependent on financial data derived from these statements. Financial statement analysis helps bank executives identify trends, forecast future performance, and make critical decisions regarding asset management, loan distribution, and capital investments (Olalekan & Yusuf, 2024).
Previous research has highlighted that sound financial statement analysis improves decision-making, enhances transparency, and reduces financial risk in banks (Ahmed & Akintoye, 2024). However, despite its significance, there is limited research specifically focused on how Wema Bank in Kwara State uses financial statement analysis to inform its decision-making process. This research intends to fill this gap by examining the extent to which financial statement analysis influences strategic decisions at Wema Bank.
Statement of the Problem
Wema Bank faces an increasingly competitive banking environment, with challenges in maintaining profitability, managing risks, and ensuring financial stability. The bank’s management often relies on financial statement analysis to make decisions regarding credit extension, investments, and regulatory compliance. However, it is unclear to what extent the analysis of these financial statements actually influences decision-making at Wema Bank, particularly in Kwara State. Given the complexity of financial data and the evolving nature of banking regulations, understanding the effectiveness of financial statement analysis in guiding managerial decisions is vital.
This study seeks to address the gap in understanding by investigating how financial statement analysis at Wema Bank impacts its decision-making processes. The findings will provide valuable insights into the role of financial data in banking management.

3. Financial statement analysis significantly influences the investment and lending decisions of Wema Bank.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on the impact of financial statement analysis on decision-making within Wema Bank, particularly in Kwara State. The analysis will be based on data from 2023 to 2025. The main limitation of the study is the reliance on secondary data obtained from the bank’s financial reports, which may not capture all aspects of internal decision-making processes. Additionally, the study will not cover other branches or regions where Wema Bank operates.
